A Look at Auto Accidents

As a team of expert personal injury attorneys, we try to stay on top of the news in the field. Recently, we read that Google has filed a patent for a unique automotive augmentation - a "sticky" adhesive coating that would take pedestrians along with the car in the event of an accident. It sounds a bit like something from a video game or a sci-fi movie, but the schematics are interesting. The premise is that, if one of Google's self-driving vehicles were to accidentally strike a pedestrian, the coating on the car's hood would "trap" the person like flypaper. So, instead of incurring additional injuries from being sent skyward or being rolled over, the unlucky individual will just be stuck on the car's hood like a fried egg.

Seriously, though, it's clear that Google has put a lot of thought into this idea, and it seems that it may actually reduce the severity of vehicle-related personal injury in the event of an accident. Of course, there's still a long way to go until these self-driving cars become a common phenomenon on our roads. But that being said, considering that the major causes of auto accidents stem from dangerous human behavior (intoxication and distraction), it may be worthwhile to place our faith in finely tuned machines and super-precise navigation systems. It may even end up saving some lives, too.

Until then, if you or a loved one are a victim in an accident in which the offending party can be determined negligent, we're here to help. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us - a highly experienced personal injury attorney will help you sort out your case.

The Many Faces of Personal Injury

A great many of us will find ourselves in situations bordering on or involving personal injury in our lifetimes. That is why, from a legal standpoint, it is important to understand what may or may not constitute personal injury or negligence from another party. Consider an auto accident, for example; car, bike, and motorcycle collisions are some of the most common causes of personal injury claims. If you were involved in an accident that wasn't your fault and have sustained an injury, you may want to hire a vehicle accident lawyer to see if you are due compensation.

At work, your employer has a legal duty to protect you and to report certain accidents and incidents. If you have been hurt on the job and think your employer is at fault, it would be worth your while to seek out a  as personal injury attorney and investigate your options. Likewise, if you have been injured in a public place, such as a grocery store or a bank, and believe that your injury can be attributed to the negligence of the location's owner, we at the Law Offices of Burg and Brock, may be able to support you in collecting due compensation should your case meet our criteria.

As experienced personal injury attorneys, we have been winning cases for our clients for many years. If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident that you believe was caused by someone else’s negligence, do not hesitate to contact the Law Offices of Burg & Brock today.

The Future of Personal Injury

While browsing the web, we came across a particularly interesting recent article that begs the question, does damage to prosthetic limbs count as personal injury or property damage? According to the law, you and your cell phone are two separate entities, but as integration between humans and machines becomes closer, will new laws be put into place that reflect this? As personal injury attorneys we do a great deal of work in this field, so we are especially curious to see what may develop further down the road.

However, according to the article, today’s prostheses are becoming increasingly integrated with the body and can even be activated by electrical signals from muscles, so at what point may they be considered as inseparable from the body itself? It leaves us to wonder: in the case of a car accident where a prosthetic limb is damaged, could that be seen as a case of personal injury, or simply damaged equipment? Especially considering cases of mobility, as with the prosthetic legs in the attached image, the damage can be perceived as much more "personal" than when, say, a person's smart phone is damaged.

Nonetheless, the jury's out as to whether personal injury laws will change in relation to this matter in the near future.

A Hit and Run is Still a Hit and Run No Matter Who’s Behind the Wheel

Our culture is obsessed with celebrities. From the clothes they wear to all the latest juicy details and gossip on their personal lives, we just can’t seem to get enough. Because we put celebrities up on a pedestal, it’s easy to believe that they could get away with anything. Still, being famous doesn’t place you above the law, and Cameron Yadidi Brock fights for justice across the board, no matter who they’re up against, whether it's Louis the neighborhood, or Lance Armstrong!

In what’s making national headlines this week, Lance Armstrong’s girlfriend, Anna Hansen, was reportedly engaged in a hit and run incident in Colorado with two parked vehicles. Except, as it turned out, Hansen wasn’t driving. The driver was in fact Lance Armstrong himself who allegedly not only had a few to drink, but attempted to have his girlfriend take the fall. Here at the Law Office of Burg & Brock as a leading personal injury attorney, we’d like to remind everyone that if you leave the scene of an accident, it’s a hit and run. It doesn’t matter who’s driving.

The police department has yet to comment if they’re charging Anna Hansen, Lance Armstrong, or both, but we think the owners of those parked cars should definitely look into a vehicle accident lawyer to make sure they’re properly represented.

Where are the Flying Cars?

If you're old enough to remember extravagant mid-20th century claims about the inevitable march of progress, you're probably also familiar with the plaintive cry of many an aging baby boomer. "It's 2015...so where is my flying car?"

As this year's Detroit Auto Show continues, it's a good time to take a look at where we've gone from automotive technology from the point of view of a personal injury attorney. What's replaced the flying car in the modern mindset are two ideas that seem a lot safer and more practical: the electric and the self-driving car. At the higher end, outstanding fully electric cars such as the Tesla are now a definite practical reality, and the unveiling of the Chevy Bolt means that popularly priced electrics with large driving ranges are on their way as well.

Of course, the car that truly could revolutionize auto safety, the Google Car, is still a work in progress. The latest story is that the self-driving car has has been, we're sure temporarily, defeated by snow. While this is truly exciting technology, auto safety is inevitably going to remain an issue for years -- though the kind of legal cases might that we'll see might well change and evolve.

In the meantime, Cameron Yadidi Brock and the entire team of the Law Offices of Burg and Brock are here to help out when due compensation isn't forthcoming from today's all-too-common injury car accidents. We have a great trial record which we plan to maintain indefinitely, even if they ever come out with those flying cars.

Think Ahead for Potential Liability if Planning a Big Event

Media photos of packed stadiums surfaced repeatedly in recent weeks, from the Pope's arrival at Rome's Olympic Stadium to seemingly daily shots of crowded soccer stadiums in Brazil as World Cup fever continues.

Certainly organizers of these large gatherings of people planned diligently for all emergency contingencies. Their attentiveness can be emulated to a smaller scale for local events.

As summer winds down, many organizations will plan for big upcoming events such as school assemblies or the multitude of other special events staged in the Los Angeles area each fall. Think about big high school football games, Octoberfest celebrations, or outdoor charity events.

Just because you don't expect 90,000 people, don't assume all is safe. The potential for personal injury always exists.

The unpredictable can occur when lots of people gather, from the simple slip-and-fall to fights, spills and (Heaven forbid) something on the property falling or breaking. Don't forget to consider premises liability.

Local event organizers are wise to ensure their gatherings are properly insured; and that the location is thoroughly inspected for potential problems.

Attendees play a part in the safety realm also. They should recognize that having fun should not totally eliminate common sense.

The Law Offices of Burg & Brock is devoted to the representation of injured people and their families on matters involving solely personal injury. We extend our best wishes for everyone to enjoy upcoming special events the rest of the year, safely!

Standing Our Ground Against "Stand Your Ground" Gun Laws

A string of recent gun-related deaths has spurred a national conversation about so-called "Stand Your Ground" laws. Earlier this week, Catoosa County homeowner Fred Youngblood shot and killed 17-year old Dalton McConathy when he discovered McConathy and a second teenage boy in the basement of his Georgia home. Georgia is one of several states with Stand Your Ground laws, which permit private property owners to use deadly force in defending themselves and their property.

Clearly, there is no upside in situations like this. Local media outlets have reported that Youngblood first offered a verbal warning encouraging the boys to leave his home, only to fire a single shot when they apparently charged towards him. In circumstances like these, it is vital for the families of wrongful death victims to have access to a quality personal injury attorney like Cameron Brock. Brock's personal injury law firm, the Law Offices of Burg & Brock, provides exceptional legal counsel in a wide variety of personal injury practice areas, including wrongful death suits.

Stand Your Ground laws may be well-intentioned—there is nothing wrong with wanting to feel safe and secure in your own home—but in a seemingly trigger-happy society like ours, the law needs to be reformed so that property owners are expected to put the same level of careful thought into discharging a firearm that people who enter private property are compelled to do in Stand Your Ground states. The rate of gun-related wrongful deaths in the United States is going up, not down. Cameron Brock and his team of personal injury lawyers in Los Angeles are committed to fighting for the rights of wrongful death victims as these events continue to play out in statehouses across the country, as well as in the court of public opinion.

Hit and Run Case Illustrates Importance of Having a Skilled Vehicle Accident Lawyer

According to a Reuters report released yesterday, the public defender in an ongoing California hit and run case has suggested his client's car had mechanical issues that caused him to lose control of his vehicle. Nathan Campbell is contesting a slew of felony charges, including murder and assault charges, after driving through a busy Venice Beach boardwalk, killing one and injuring 16 others. What the media does not seem to be addressing, however, is what is at stake, both legally and financially, for the injury victims of this terrible tragedy.

'One Bite' Laws Harm Victims of Dog Bite Injuries

Travis County resident Danielle Melaun understands all too well the importance of having an aggressive personal injury attorney fighting for her. After almost losing her upper lip in a nasty dog bite injury, she has amassed nearly $100,000 in medical bills and other health-related expenses. To her dismay, Ms. Melaun was informed by her attorney that getting compensated for her medical bills would be contingent on her ability to prove that the dog had bitten someone else prior to her own injury.

If that seems counter intuitive, here's why: Texas has a 'one bite law'. One bite laws essentially protect dogs and their owners from any legal or financial liabilities, providing it was the dog's first bite. Laws like these have the potential to make it very difficult for dog bite victims to receive just compensation for their injuries. Currently, 16 states have one bite laws in place; thankfully, California is not one of them. Even so, the Law Offices of Burg & Brock, a leading Los Angeles personal injury law firm, is encouraging clients to protect themselves from potential dog bite-related injuries by seeking quality legal protection.

Founder Cameron Brock has been a prominent Los Angeles personal injury lawyer for nearly twenty years. The skilled staff at the Law Offices of Burg & Brock is well equipped to provide unmatched legal care for people suffering from a wide range of personal injuries, including vehicle accidents, wrongful death, product liability and much more.
