The
official first day of summer is June 21, but many of us probably have spent time
in or near the water already. So now is the time of year that we see news items
about swimming pool accidents, such as the report last month where swimmers in a crowded Florida
pool were shocked when underwater lighting malfunctioned.
The
message: many, many things can go wrong around a pool, not just the slip-and-fall
injuries that occur on wet concrete. Most swimming pools require motorized
elements to clean or warm them, or both. As with the instance noted above, many
pools are lighted especially public pools.
The
proactive property owner should, if he or she has not already, thoroughly
examine every element of the pool and pool area, from electrical to walkway
safety and especially climb-on accessories such as diving boards or
in-water ladders. Dangers of any malfunction, however slight, are magnified
with water. The more people visit the water element of your property, the more
the risk.
Water-related
injuries are unfortunate and too often tragic. Give your pool a careful premises liability review and protect yourself, your loved ones and everyone
visiting your pool this summer.
